There is all the furore about how the
FIFA Rankings work. You can click on this link to split the hairs.
Back to the story. Who would be World
number 1 if the World Cup was called off today? I have taken the
liberty to play with FIFA's ranking widget and provisionally,
Argentina and Colombia would be joint top on 1555 points.
Pre-tournament favourites Germany would drop to third on 1486 points
while Divock Origi's Belgium would be in fourth. The Netherlands
would be in 5th Uruguay sixth, France 7th, outgoing champions Spain
8th, Switzerland 9th and hosts Brazil would be 10th.
In Africa, Algeria, provisionally
24th, would be top, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (25th globally),
Nigeria (34th), Egypt (36th), Ghana and Tunisia (38th and 42nd
respectively).
The biggest globally movers would be
The Netherlands, France, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Nigeria who would
have moved 10 places up.
Points wise, Colombia provisionally
have gained 418, The Netherlands 412, Belgium 394, and Argentina 380.
The biggest droppers based on position
would be The Cape Verde Islands who would drop 29 places, Peru 14,
Slovenia 12, and England 10.
Biggest points losers are Cape Verde
who drop 273 points, Spain 256, El Salvador, 247, and England 179.
In the process, someone will ask where
is Kenya? Well for being in the stands we get no points but a promise
was honoured. Points wise, we would be on 339, which would push our
beloved country to the top 100.
Just a reminder, these provisional
rankings will be torn to pieces by Sunday morning EAT after the
quarter finals are done.
But here is the possible scenario.
Argentina will be World Number One if they reach the final, while
Germany will top the global rankings if they make the final and
Argentina and Colombia drop over this weekend, but my prophetic
skills are neither here nor there. But lets watch and see.
